Island Tropics Restaurant
About This Spot
Island Tropics Restaurant welcomes you with a vibrant yet comfortably laid-back vibe where the rich spirit of Jamaica seems to lace every corner. Nestled on a bustling stretch of N Main St in Jacksonville, this spot feels like a cherished neighborhood hideaway where familiar rhythms and warm smiles invite you to slow down and savor both company and cuisine.
Inside, the mood is lived-in and casual — music carries a lively pulse without overpowering conversations, and the steady stream of guests reflects a community that returns not just for the food, but for the sense of belonging. The hum of laughter, the occasional playful banter from the staff, and the aroma of spices filling the air all blend to create a space that feels more like an extended kitchen table than a restaurant.
Here, the menu reads like a love letter to authentic Jamaican home cooking. Generous plates of jerk chicken, tender oxtails stewed just right, and heaping sides of rice and peas with lightly sautéed cabbage offer comfort with every bite. Whether you’re sharing a meal of sweet plantains and savory curry shrimp or sipping on house-made carrot juice, the flavors invite you to linger and rediscover the pleasures of rich, soulful cooking. Meals arrive with enough warmth and substance to satisfy both appetite and heart, fostering that rare feeling of genuine nourishment.
What makes Island Tropics truly resonate is its human dimension — the owner’s presence adds an unmistakable layer of care that transforms meals into moments. It’s a place where familiar hellos and good-natured vibes circulate freely, wrapping guests in a sense of welcome that lingers after the last forkful. For many, this is not just a stop for good food but a touchstone of friendly connection and cultural celebration amid the daily rhythm.
For those seeking not just to eat but to experience a slice of Jamaican warmth paired with generous servings and a lively atmosphere, Island Tropics quietly stands out. Here, every visit feels like coming home, where the flavors are honest, the pace unhurried, and the hospitality unmistakably soulful.

The jerk chicken was great. Low price for small meal. Homemade carrot juice was a little pricey, but taste great too. Customer service was off this visit. Music was playing to loud and the order taker was rude. She had an attitude, because she couldn't he me clearly. Due to the fact that they are playing their music too loud... Need more courtesy towards customers. The food is really good here....

This is my favorite Jamaican restaurant in Jacksonville. Don't waste your time going anywhere else. The food always tastes good and they give you plenty for a great price. Got the express stew chicken for only $6. I've been going here for years and I've never been disappointed and they have THE BEST oxtails!

I’ve ate jerk chicken at a pot luck before but not at a restaurant before. This was a great first experience and the value and serving size was extremely generous! Food was tasty and with good spice to it. I don’t live in the area but will definitely keep this place in mind if I am in the area again. Thank you! Also friendly and good customer service!

So happy we decided to not just pass this place again. The hubs and I love Jamaican food and this was pretty good. We started basic on the first visit to get an idea of the food. We both got the med Jerk chicken plate w/ 2 sides. I got the cabbage and rice and peas. I also got a side of the oxtail gravy to pour over my rice. The chicken was grilled perfectly with a nice char and the jerk sauce was delicious. The rice and peas with the oxtail gravy is my new favorite side. The cabbage was good, but nothing spectacular on that. The hubs got the Mac and cheese instead of cabbage and that was the star side for us. There was a good noodle to cheese ratio and it paired well with the jerk seasoning. Looking forward to getting the oxtails next time if the gravy was any indication of what’s to come! Also, their prices are more than reasonable, a little over $20, for our two full meals and side of oxtail gravy, and the team members were all friendly and helpful.
